A Guide to Spider-Man, Venom, and Other Popular Marvel Characters
Most everyone has heard of Spider-Man. Even the newer generations who didn't grow up reading comic books are familiar with the story of this likeable web-slinger thanks to the two hit movies recently released. In the comic books, animated shows, and movies alike there are lots of intriguing characters featured. Read on to find out more about Spider-Man, Venom, and some other popular characters who've been a part of the Spider-Man story.
Spider-Man: When he's not fighting crime, Spider-Man is mild mannered young man Peter Parker. The story began when Parker, an orphaned teen, was bitten by a radioactive spider which gave him all sorts of incredible powers. After his uncle was murdered, he swore to bring the killer to justice and dedicated his abilities to fighting villains and stopping crimes. He wears a distinctive red and blue suit, although he has sometimes worn a black anti-venom suit.
Mary Jane Watson: Mary Jane is the girl Peter has a big crush on, but is too shy to approach. He saves her from all sorts of danger in the guise of Spider-Man. Although it takes awhile, she discovers his big secret and even becomes his wife in the later comic books.
Venom: Venom was created from an alien life form which was once part of Spider-Man's black costume. After he broke free of the symbiote, the alien grew and morphed into the villain known as Venom, one of the most popular of all the Spider-Man villains but not the only one by far.
Carnage: Carnage is a vicious red villain who also came from the alien symbiote. When Eddie Brock (Venom's alter ego) shared a jail cell with Cletus Kasady, a remnant was left behind which merged with Kasady and turned him into the creature known as Carnage. In a way, Carnage is like Venom's offspring.
Green Goblin: The Green Goblin was born when Norman Osborn, the father of Peter Parker's friend Harry, underwent dangerous lab experiments. He is the only villain to know Peter's superhero identity and even killed Peter's girlfriend Gwen Stacy.
Doctor Octopus: Doctor Octopus was Peter's hero, scientist Otto Octavius. He turned into the villain when an experiment involving mechanical arms went wrong, killing his wife and destroying his laboratory. He is one of the longest running Spider-Man villains.
