Spider-Man Comics -- Entertaining Fans for Decades

Spider-Man first appeared in August 1962 in Marvel Comics' Amazing Fantasy #15. It was the first time that an adolescent was given superhero status. Normally, teens were featured as sidekicks only in comic books. The story of Peter Parker and his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man soon found great popularity with fans of all ages. If you missed the early comic books, read on to find out how a broody yet extremely intelligent young man morphed into one of the most recognizable fictional heroes in the world!

The story first begins with orphaned Peter living with his caring aunt and uncle. He likes the girl next door, Mary Jane Watson, but is too shy to tell her. His only friend is a boy named Harry Osborn, but the friendship is tense because it seems Harry's father Norman likes Peter better than his own son. While at a genetics fair, Peter is bitten by a bioengineered spider which imparts him with remarkable powers. He finds that he can move quickly, jump long distances, shoot webs and stick to walls. He also has what's called spider-sense, a form of psychic power that allows him to sense crime as it happens.

At first, Peter has no intention of fighting crime with his powers. He instead decides to enter a wrestling match to win money for a car. But on the way home from the match, he discovers his uncle has been killed by a criminal. From that moment on, he decides to use his powers to bring down his uncle's murderer and fight crime. Throughout the years, Peter Parker has evolved from a gawky teen to a college student, then to a married man in the professional career world.

Anyone who has followed Spider-Man comics through the years is sure to be familiar with the wide variety of colorful villains that Spider-Man has fought. There's Carnage, Venom, the Green Goblin, the Vulture, Sandman, and so many more who've made their appearances throughout the years. The combination of good vs evil, the compelling backstory and the touch of romance between Peter and Mary Jane has captured the imagination of Marvel comics fans for decades. With the emergence of two hit movies based on the comic book and one more on the way, it's likely that Spider-Man will remain a beloved superhero for many years to come!
